LDV Suspension Top Mount The Need to Know Guide

Posted in Vehicle Parts by Goldstar Commercials on April 09th 2019
In any system, there will be parts that do jobs that go unnoticed. They’re often the ones that do the work that isn’t visible or not considered particularly ‘glamorous’, connecting the top end to the bottom. Without them, the system would not work and the end product would not be produced.

Take an LDV Maxus V80 Genuine Top Suspension Mount and Bearing as an example – without one, the suspension of the van would simply be unworkable and without the suspension, the steering would become extremely difficult, rending the vehicle’s operation unsafe and unusable.

So in this blog, we’re going to cover what a suspension top mount is, when you’ll need to replace it and precisely why you need to replace it.

What Is An LDV Suspension Top Mount?

As the name suggests, a LDV suspension top mount is the component that attaches the suspension strut to the vehicle. Its additional role, that isn’t immediately obvious, is that it insulates the noise produced by the tyres, as well as the vibrations from the vehicle. Many front strut mounts will also contain a bearing (or bearing plate) that serves as the steering pivot.

Think of a strut mount like a sandwich – one side is bolted to the vehicle, whilst the other side is connected to the strut. The ‘filling’ in the middle of these two pieces of bread (only you wouldn’t want to eat it) is a rubber-like insulating material. As the vehicle moves and goes over any uneven surfaces, the ‘up and down’ impact will push and pull at the mount – the mount’s job is to cushion these impacts to reduce any effects, noise or vibrations that would otherwise transmit into the vehicle.

An LDV suspension top mount includes bearings that the strut attaches to. With a bearing on each side of the vehicle, they act as the steering pivots – making them a critical component that affects movement, smoothness and response.

How Would I Know When The Time Is Right To Change My Strut Mounts?

The simplest way of knowing when to change your strut mounts is that if any of struts or coil springs need replacing because of age or wear, then the mounts should also be replaced. Any mount that has worn or been damaged will require the disassembly of the entire strut set-up, therefore replacing all of the used components at the same time will save the extra work in doing it all again a second, third or fourth time.

There are also a number of signs of a worn strut mount to look/feel/listen out for whilst driving. These include:
  • Clunking noises
  • Vibrations
  • Loose, stiff or noisy steering
  • Out-of-sync tire alignment
  • Tire wear
  • Loose or damaged components (of the mount)
  • Excessive movement
  • Corrosion
  • Cracked (or sagging) rubber

Why Should I Move Quickly To Replace My Worn Strut Mounts?

If you do not replace your LDV suspension top mount, it will cause issues throughout the suspension system, making steering more difficult – the uneven wearing of the shock absorbers and the tyres are common issues caused as a result of failing strut mounts.

As with the other components of the mount, it isn’t strictly necessary to replace all of the parts at the same time but it does prove to be more economical in the long-term. With your vehicle requiring two top strut mounts, it’s advisable that when one starts to become worn, that both are replaced. That way, you can get the most from your van and enjoy a better driving experience, prolonging the life of suspension system, other parts and perhaps even the life of the vehicle itself.

When your new struts are fitted, always ensure that you check that everything is aligned and set to the vehicle’s correct specifications to prevent any further issues from occurring.
