The History Of Volkswagen

Volkswagen beginning lies in the 1932 German Labour Front (Deutsche Arbeitsfront). The government at the time ordered the production of a basic vehicle for citizen transportation. “The People’s Car” was planned to cost a similar price to a small motorbike, however the project was not financially sound and it was only made possible due to government funding.

There were numerous programs through the project, one of which was the VW vehicle, a prototype of which many would recognise as the Beetle (or the Bug) from today. However, during the second world war, production shifted to military vehicles, such as the Type 82.

In the post-war period in West Germany Volkswagen became a symbol of the regeneration of West Germany. Their vehicles became very popular internationally; the first official importer in the UK was Colborne Garages in Ripley, Surrey.

Well Known Volkswagen Vehicles

There are numerous well known vehicles created by Volkswagen. Those interested in military history with a focus on the Second World War might be familiar with the Kübelwagen and Schwimmwagen from the early ‘40s. In particular the Schwimmwagen is very noteworthy, did you know that the type 166 Schwimmwagen is the most numerous amphibious car in history?

However, with regards to civilian vehicles, it’s hard to forget the well known vehicles such as the Beetle and the Volkswagen Golf. The classic Beetle from the late ’30s to 2003 followed by the New Beetle in ’89 which stopped production in 2010. The version of the Beetle currently in production started in 2011 and is assembled in Puebla City in Mexico.

The Golf on the other hand started production in ’74 and is still produced to today. Numerous adaptations of the Golf have been created including a plug-in hybrid electric, an all-electric, and an exotic sports version.

However, the manufacturer doesn’t exclusively make small urban vehicles, they also create some powerful large vehicles such as the large SUVs the Atlas, and Touareg, and the large MPV the Sharan.

Some Of The Spare Parts For Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Available

  • Seat Belts. When installed and worn correctly, and kept in good condition, seat belts can save lives; however if they malfunction due to improper installation or poor condition, they can cause significant injuries. It’s important to note that it isn’t just the driver’s seatbelt that is important. According to research from the University of Virginia , drivers are “2x more likely to die when left backseat passenger doesn’t wear seatbelt”.
However, it isn’t just failure to wear a seatbelt that can be lethal. Just a small amount of slack in a seat belt could be enough to cause significant injury to the person(s) travelling in a vehicle. In the event of a collision, this excess belt could cause the passenger or driver to be thrown about inside the vehicle, possibly even being thrown out of the vehicle itself.

  • Exhausts. The role of an exhaust is to direct fumes away from passengers and the driver, improve the performance of the engine, and improve fuel consumption. With these three important roles, a poorly performing exhaust could be a serious issue for your commercial vehicles.
Some signs your vehicle’s exhaust may be in need of repair or replacement can be a decrease in power and acceleration, a decrease in the fuel efficiency, or a smell of gas.

  • Fuel Pumps. This component is responsible for pumping fuel into the engine; making it a very important part of the vehicle. So if the fuel pump suffers damage it could have serious complications. For example, it could cause an engine misfire which could result in issues such as engine overheating and pre-igniting the fuel whilst driving.
  • Airbags. Seatbelts aren’t the only safety products that vehicles are equipped with. Another example of products designed for the safety of both passengers and drivers are the airbags.
An airbag deploys in the event of a collision and providing that they are in good condition and are not damaged, they could save your life. Airbags work by using a small chemical explosive to create nitrogen or argon that fills a nylon airbag. However, if they are fault or damaged, they could explode when deployed, resulting in serious injury or death.
