How Does A Vehicle's Engine Work?

There are numerous different types of engines, however the one seen in cars and vans is known as an internal combustion engine. This is because fuel and air combust inside, creating the energy required to move pistols which then move the car or van.

Engine Components? What Do They Do?

  • The Engine Block
Also known as the cylinder block, the engine block is the foundation of the engine.
Large tubes called cylinders are cast into this integrated structure, which provides the engine's pistons with the space to slide up and down; this is where the secondary name of cylinder block comes from.

In addition to space being cast to provide the pistons with room to slide, ducts and passageways are also built into the block; allowing for oil and coolant to flow to the necessary areas of the engine.
  • Combustion Chamber
In this chamber, fuel, air, pressure, and electricity create a small controlled explosion that moves the pistons up and down. The motion of the pistons creates power to move the vehicle.

The components that make up the combustion chamber are the cylinder, the pistons, and the cylinder head. The cylinder head sits over the cylinders and there is a gasket which seals the join between the engine block and the cylinder head. The cylinder is the wall of the combustion chamber with the top of the pistons acting as the floor. Additionally, as the fuel ignites in the combustion chamber, the pistons are pushed downwards, which causes the crankshaft to turn, converting the up down motion of the pistols into a rotational motion; allowing the car or van to move.

  • Valves
In an internal combustion engine, there are two different types of vales. The first type is the intake valve which brings in a mixture of air and fuel into the combustion chamber, allowing for the combustion reaction that powers the vehicle. The second type, the outtake valve, then allows the exhaust that has been created during the combustion to exit out of the chamber.

  • Fuel Injectors
In order to supply the engine with fuel, a fuel injection system is required. Normally cars and vans will be equipped with either direct fuel injection, ported fuel injection, or throttle body fuel injection.

The first type, direct fuel injection provides each cylinder in the engine with its own injector, providing fuel when it is required.

The second type, the ported fuel injection sprays fuel into the intake manifold outside of the intake valve instead of spraying fuel into the cylinder.

The third type, throttle body injection works similar to an older method of transporting fuel to the cylinders that fuel injection replaced the carburettor. The throttle body injector uses a single duel injector which mixes with air in a throttle body and then is sent to the cylinders using the engine's intake valves.

Signs Of A Damaged Engine

Many would argue that the engine is the heart of any vehicle, so it's important that it is treated with care and if any issues arise, it is repaired by a skilled professional. One symptom of engine problems is the check engine light turning on; however there are a range of other warning signs that could be caused by a damaged engine.

  • The Car/Van Makes Strange Noises
If your vehicle is making strange noises, this is a significant warning sign. In particular a knocking noise originating from the vehicle's bonnet is considered by many to be a classic sign of an engine dying. However, other significant noises that you need to keep an eye (or in this case an ear) out for are popping, spitting, and backfiring.

  • Strange Odours Inside The Car
Strong smells such as exhaust or engine fumes, or other strange smells could indicate significant engine damage. The engine's emissions should never be odorous and olfactible whilst inside the vehicle.

  • Smoke Is Leaving The Exhaust
There are numerous different reasons why smoke may be leaving the exhaust of your vehicle. For example, if the smoke is black it means that the engine is burning too much fuel; this could indicate damage to the engine's fuel injectors. However, on the other hand, dark blue smoke would indicate that your engine is burning oil, which means that oil is leaking into the engine combustion chamber.
